In at number nine for our top ten summer attractions, is the Mont Blanc Marathon weekend. This really is a spectacular sporting event to kick start the summer programme of activities in Chamonix. The event takes place on the weekend of 26th to 28th June but the whole of the race week creates a festival atmosphere in the town with plenty of associated events day and night and the Partner Village showcasing sports manufacturers and the different trail races found throughout the world on the Place du Mont-Blanc from 25th to 27th June.
Although the first event in this series dates back to 1979 (Cross du Mont Blanc at 23km), the longer ‘Marathon’ only came into being in 2003 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first event. Due to popularity the ’10km du Mont Blanc’ was added in 2004 and in 2011 the crazy ‘Vertical KM’ was added which at 3.9km and 1,000 metres of ascent, has to be one of the shortest sprint races you are ever likely to encounter! Since then the ‘Ultra Marathon’ event at 80km was added in 2013 to meet the requirements of hosting the Skyrunning World Championships in 2014. As you can see it really is a busy weekend of sporting events and the town of Chamonix is buzzing with activity and awash with loads of wiry looking ultra athletes…
